Somehow I find myself nominated as today’s ride leader, something I have never been before. But seriously, how hard can it be?

I have long observed club greats like Danny H, Tony DS, Mike E and Capt Bob, and it seems that all you do is rock up, count the riders, and set off for somewhere that sells cake. And it’s ok to lose a couple en route apparently?

So I count - we are 5 - and chart a course to Mill End Plants via Datchworth and Walkern.

A warm night but with a strongish breeze on the second half.

Great to see everyone out and well done all riders. Some bringing out some truly classic looking bikes. Although there was a headwind along the A414 it wasn’t until after the foot bridge that is was really felt.

Wheelers' club 10s make their return!

  • Category 6 ride led by Mike East

The prime number of seven starters reduced to six before departure due to a split tyre. A strong tailwind made for accelerated progress outwards via Datchworth, Aston and Luffenhall. Mill End Tea Rooms as excellent as ever, and no panic buying, not even on the Bakewell tart.

More challenging riding from the headwind on the return via Walkern, Bennington, Watton and Stonyhills.

No riders lost this week, nor any punctures. Personal protection zones respected throughout. Great company over 31 miles.

Just two riders took on the Essex route, which was fun in the winds -  61.5 miles covered at an average speed of 17.1 mph together with climbing of 2408 feet.
Overall, a good testing ride with plenty of strong headwinds & think we both enjoyed it.
The roads had plenty of standing water but there were no punctures, making it a great ride.

Our first proper ride of 2020  - hurrah! Five members rode today out to the Shaw’s Corner/ Ayot St. Lawrence area, over 55 miles, at an average speed of 17.1 mph with 2280 ft of climbing. The south west wind blew at 19 mph. We also rode through 5 major road floods up to 2ft deep!

Overall, the team rode really well and worked great together, chain ganging into headwinds. Hopefully everyone enjoyed my mystery route; I think it would be an excellent summer ride. Looking forward to next category 2 ride.

  • 72" Restricted Gear, F6A/10 course - 1st March

Nine hardy competitors rode on a sunny but cold and windy morning and all finished. Well done to you all! This event is part of the "Out of Season Best All Rounder" competition (BAR) together with an 81" Restricted Gear 10 and the Hill Climb.

It was not looking good - gusty and drizzly, then a puncture on Mangrove Road on the way to the start. Just about made it to Sainsbury’s before the one member there headed home. So, just two (prime number) riders today - tough Herdwicks not held back in the fold by Bo Peep.

  • Category 2 ride

Just two participants were brave enough to ride out in very strong winds & rain.
They covered our Essex route - 62 miles averaging 16.4 mph with 2754 ft climbing. Again, great effort.

    Cat 2 ride again!

Twelve met up in Ware, reduced at Westmill by 3 who had togger or domestic agendas. Once again, no prime numbers. However the magic of maths has many forms, not least today’s palindromic date of wonder - 02-02-2020. Result - ride leader very happy.

  • On Sunday 19th January Wheelers' members gathered at Mayflower Place in Hertingfordbury for their annual dinner and awards ceremony. This year the start time was put back to 4:00 pm so many had been able to complete club rides in the morning, thus providing themselves with some justification to indulge fully in the food provided.
