The  midweek rides of 2015 began on a bright bracing spring evening. 4 or 5 went off without supervision. The other 11 progressed niftily to Allen's Green and back without incident. 25 miles.

  • Strong performances by Wheelers win them 2nd and 3rd places.

  • Spencer Stratford is highest-placed 4th Cat.

12 of us headed out to Hitchin in nice sunny weather via Knebworth, Codicote, Whitwell and Preston. Just as the leader was thinking it was going fairly well, came the shout of ‘xxx canicle’, which turns out to be a broken chain. This was soon fixed and we headed to Du Tea, Hitchin, where we were served with a nice selection of cakes, coffee, and proper tea (loose leaf, not teabags, and out of a pot).

A really enjoyable ride in decent weather to the Village Tearoom, Hatfield Heath, where, thanks to meticulous planning by leader Captain Bob, seats had been reserved and extra crew employed to cope with the predicted rush. After a noisy interlude and profuse apologies for the disturbance to a table of smartly dressed pensioners we enjoyed a trouble free tailwind assisted return to Ware. 15 riders

  • Nick pipped Karl for top spot. Paul S knocked 3 minutes off his time from last year.

A stubborn chill persisted all the ride from Ware to Bunters and back, via Barwick Ford & Great Munden out and Furneaux Pelham, Braughing & Barwick Ford on the return. At the stop the group of 16 split between the two cafes, depending on their preference for solid British fare and sophisticated continental patisserie. There were no incidents, mechanicals nor sightings of rheas. The sun finally appeared when riders were home, showered and settled in front of the TV watching repeats of Hi De Hi and Ever Decreasing Circles. 16 riders

12 riders in total. Bruno decided to take a short cut to the café and Barry accompanied him.  Paul also left early. The remaining 9 of us went to the café, most to the ride against strong cold north-easterly wind.   After lunch, we lost Sara, Patrick and Mark.  Lesley too went home as she wanted to check on her new dog, so that left 6 of us.   Eventually, Wendy peeled off and then John took the old A10 back in order to avoid Barwick Ford, leaving 4 of us. No punctures or other events.

A very pleasant ride out from Ware to the pop-up cafe in Great Chishill (just outside Royston).

Well I say cafe but it was actually the front room of a very nice bungalow next to the church. From May onwards the cafe is actually the church but out of season it is volunteers’ front rooms!

Friendly welcome, quick service, fresh homemade soup and cake and excellent price...what's not to love!!
