Puncture repair at the airfield

Category 6 ride led by Tony Dos Santos

Today was going to be a sunny day, so I expected a few to turn up. Mike (Hill-Der) Spicer advised he was coming, so I met up with him in Cheshunt. I didn’t tell Mike it was a hilly route.

We turned up at Allenburys at 8.30. More and more started coming in. It was going to be a busy ride. Before ride off, I counted thirteen. We were going to meet our fourteenth, Mike East, in Nazeing. As Chris was here, we obviously set off late; he was faffing around as normal!

Off we went and off to Stanstead Abbots and round the lanes. We met Mike East and we were fourteen, I know, I know on a winter’s day.

We got to the aerodrome at 11. Some started ordering, and then to our horror, the cafe advised they stopped cooking food as they had run out of plates - no more orders until 12. So, some had ordered and some had to eat cake. Luckily Kate and I had ordered. Leigh and Rich (AKA Kev, AKA KTC, AKA KFC, AKA The Covid Kid) didn’t make the cut. So they got an Eccles cake each. I can’t go into great detail why Kev has so many AKA’s as, firstly it would take too long and secondly it would be too rude to print.

A few minutes later mine Kate’s and my sausage rolls came out, and they were lush!

After we had eaten, Leigh decided he wanted a picture of us both. What I didn’t realise is that he had draped an old rag over my shoulder, I was going to post it online, but the “old rag” was just too offensive to be shown in a public forum!

Fed and watered, we were about to ride off and Amanda advised she had a puncture. Immediately international rescue jumped in - yes Claire and Leigh were exceptional. Claire wanted to use the tyre glider, so took the tyre off, which Leigh checked for thorns. Claire then got the tyre back on with the glider to great applause. Well done Claire, now all you have to do is advise us all on the Garmin, when you have finally read the manual. Wheel back on and we were away. See attached image with Claire holding the tyre glider, Leigh doing the work and, Amanda looking on.

There were four hills on the way back and Mike (Hill-Der) Spicer was ecstatic about this - we all know Mike likes hills!

Everyone traversed (big word, eh) the hills with great aplomb (another big word).

When we got back to Stanstead Abbot I said my goodbyes to set off home.

All in an all, a great ride.

Thanks for coming.

Obviously written on the throne!
