Category 4 ride led by Pete Kelleway

Four of us set off from Ware to head to Dobbies Garden Centre. Only one of us didn’t get the memo to say wear your Herts Wheelers top! After about 200m into the ride, Ian declared we were off course. Hmm, we soon realised he hadn’t downloaded the amended version where I had reversed the direction.

With the sun out and in high spirits we made good progress. However on one of the country lanes a lorry approached. We soon realised that he wasn’t going to stop or slow down so evasive action was required. Ian decided to sit down in the grassy verge; unfortunately he forgot to unclip! No harm done and we continued on. As we passed the Bell pub Graham mentioned something about an Essex chuffin or that is what I thought I heard. Suj was amazed that I could detect cars behind well before he could hear them. After a while the secret of the Garmin Varia was disclosed.

We arrived in Melbourne at 11.36. I was paying attention to the time because Dobbies stopped serving breakfast at 11.30! Ian would not be happy. Plan b would have to executed; the Teapot in Phillimore Garden Centre, which was 10 metres closer, served all day breakfasts. Phew, I had got away with that one.

Fed and watered the route home featured a few bumps (some might say hills, well, Garmin did) but the sun was out and the wind was behind us (well sort of). As we cycled up Dowsetts Lane and working out where we would leave each other, Graham said the (or was it a) reason he had come out was because he had to do some shopping in Ware. He promptly revealed a shopping bag.

We decided to part ways in Wadesmill. Considering Suj doesn’t cycle much, but does stupid things like going for a 10 mile run he was great. Let’s hope he gets another pass to come out with us again soon.

Thanks to all again for a great ride and company.
