Category 6 ride report written by David Smith
Our Service today was led by the Reverend Kevin McPheat (alias Rev. Kev) assisted (so he claims) by Honorary Deacon David. There were no less than 10 hymns (and 1 her in the person of Jane (spouse of Bruno – Patron Saint of pipe-smokers).
We assembled at the Shrine of St. Allen of Bury at 9 o’clock and processed somewhat informally up the well-worn aisle of the A1170, deviating to pass the College of St. Edmund the Martyr in Old Hall Green.
The smoke from the incense (or was it the early morning mist?) slowly cleared, and by the time we reached the chapel at Mill End (dedicated to some tart from Bakewell) the hot-cross bun was shining and we sat in the garden to listen attentively to the Deacon’s homily, scuppered unfortunately by a somewhat irreverent remark from Bro. Antonio about the Chinese alphabet.
And in the garden was Bro. Antonio was tempted to partake not only of sausage baguette but a large slice of sweetmeat, to which he succumbed right readily and indeed appeared to revel in his indulgence. Two candidates for reception (Ray and Peter) were tested on their catechism (“Have you got £20?) and formal applications for membership have been duly received.
Following the Recessional Procession (back up the A1170) Rev. Kev invited all into the Presbytery garden for refreshments, which were graciously accepted by the more dedicated of the flock, who were entertained by an individual appearing to walk on the surface of the adjoining river, but who, it transpired, was on a paddle board.
The service ended with a dismissal and blessing from Rev. Kev (“I’ve got to get home now”) and we dispersed joyfully to spread the good news of another ride next week.
