Club ride reports - 2nd January

02 Jan 23

Category 4/6 ride led by Lisa Ridoutt

It was day 2 of the ‘unofficial rides’ and twelve Wheelers turned up for this one, six of us having also ridden the previous day.

I kicked off proceedings by arriving with a puncture, which I quickly repaired (Enzo may have helped a little) and we tested out at least four of the group’s pumps for good measure.

Within 100 metres of setting off we were down to 10 Wheelers. I thought it best not to ask what had happened to 2 of them in case I’d set a club record of losing them within the first minute. I comforted myself with the fact that it was an unofficial ride, so losing riders didn’t count.

The ride out to The Cafe in the Orchard in Shenley was quite eventful, as we had to cross lots of flooded roads. At one particularly deep flood I took the decision to send Tony through it first in order to test the depth;  if it came up to his neck we'd know it was nearly 3ft high and to be avoided.

It seemed to be the day to either go horse riding or lose control of little dogs. At one point a horse, an escaped dog, ten Wheelers, a flood and a narrow lane all converged at the same point to cause quite a bit of chaos.

The cafe was efficient, reasonably priced and warm so once refreshed we were ready to swim back to Hertford on our bikes.

We said goodbye to a few riders as we headed home, had yet another encounter with an escaped dog (which we all tried to catch but it managed to zigzag around us) and the remaining four arrived back in Hertford.

Great run out on a lovely winter's day.
