Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

13/12/14 - Swaffham CX1 111km Audax

It was fairly dangerous at the 09:00 start as several riders were slip-sliding their way east from Swaffham.  Some hit the deck but fortunately there were no serious injuries.  By 10:00 things had sufficiently warmed up to remove the ever present threat of a tumble and the rest of the journey turned out to be fairly uneventful on a lovely winter's day.  A not too hilly, not too arduous route got... Clubruns 14th December

On a very cold, icy morning and with Clive's First Training Ride from Ware, not so many turned up for the med or easy at Hertford.  The few easies met, had a conflab as to whether to cancel or not and then made their way carefully on their chosen route.  The four meds found that the slightly larger roads were ok but an element of care was necessary on the lanes.

Clubruns 7th December

Clubruns 30th November

Not much not to like today.  Weather glorious for the time of year.  Nearly forty out to take advantage of it.  Over twenty turned out for the easy so the group was split with both groups arriving at Ardeley within a few minutes of each other.  The fast\med consisted of three but they started earlier due to family commitments.  Thus many of the usual fast\meds joined in with the meds, so thirteen... Clubruns 23rd November

Few drops of rain, and most stay at home!  Nine Hardy Ha-Ha's swam, snorkelled, floated their way to the rearranged destinations.  The four on the medium decided that Royston was a channel crossing too far and so stopped at Puckeridge where they were met with open arms at Something Lovely.  Didn't even have to sit on bin liners!  The five easies felt that swimming to Whitwell wasn't a good idea... Clubruns 16th November

Five braved the journey to the start of the medium at Thaxted.  From there they went to Stradishall for their constitutionals.  This left the rest to either easy or med\fast.  Most took the easy option with twenty-four riders strung out on the lanes to Buntingford.  Eight of these stopped at Westmill in order to ease the possible congestion.  All met up in Bunts and rode back.  In very wet... Clubruns 9th November

Only meds & easies this week.  The weather must be a-changing.  The biggest group consisting of 15 took off to Harlington in the depths of Beds.  Made a change to ride on some roads not normally associated with us.  When we arrived there was a wedding pageant at the garden centre so JohnH was allowed to park his banana next to the vintage cars so that it could be babysat!

The easies trip did not... [more]

22/11/14 - The Swaffham Scorpion 100km Audax

Weather forecasters were spot on.  It rained.  And then some.  Turned up at about half eight for a nine o'clock kickoff.  Weather wasn't great, but it was saving itself for the start.  Soon after nine we were all soaked.  It was a bit breezy, but not cold so it wasn't an unbearable ride.  Heading east, then north and then west I got back at about 13:50, 105 kms later.  Was more uncomfortable... 26/10/14 - Emitremmus Desrever 100km Audax

Got a bit cold waiting for the start but soon warmed up once we got going.  About ten of us took part and it was good to see the blue\yellow HW tops in the distance - guess who couldn't keep up!  A very fast journey to Saffron Walden was counterbalanced by an arduous into-the-wind return.  Fortunately a breather was to be had when Alan punctured.  Due to the clocks going back, it became a bit of a... 09/08/14 - Windsor-Chester-Windsor 600km Audax

I'd done a 200, a 300 & a 400 but never attempted a 600km Audax.  After spending Friday night sleeping (badly) at a Scout Hut in Windsor, I set the next day at 07:00 for this 615km Audax.  All went well and soon I was at the first control crossing the A40 at Eynsham (75kms).  From there it was on to Honeybourne (132kms).  Naturally we were heading NW into a westerly wind.  It could have been... 26/07/14 - National 400 Audax

I wanted to better my previous one day best of 300kms so settled for this one.  Left Ingleby Barwick (twixt Stockton & Yarm) at 10:00 for the Ripon control (72kms).  With the wind following it was a very quick journey and my average was 18.2mph.  I didn't think I was putting in too much effort but as the day got hotter and hotter, I got slower and slower.  Sedbergh at 158kms was a welcome relief...
