Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Clubruns 14th September

With twelve club members involved in the Hill Climb, it was thought that numbers may be restricted in the club rides.  Not so.  Alex took a party of ten to Ickleton.  Only two punctures.  Wendy took a group of sixteen to Scrumptious at Dunmow where they were royally welcomed and penned into a separate room (for smellies?!?).  The easies covered just over 50 miles whilst the meds took in just under... Next Clubrun - 21st September

As the easy group is getting too large, a different approach is required.  So there will be two easy rides to the same destination, one from Ware and one from Hertford starting from half an hour apart.

(09:30) - The fast (55-60) is from Hertford on the Royston Course.

(09:30) - The fast\med (50) is on RouteC from Ware.

(09:30) - The med (45) is from Hertford for a trip to The Mocha Cafe,... [more]

Clubruns 7th September

Over twenty turned up for the easy.  As per usual this group had to be split so half went with Bob and half with Mike, both groups taking different routes.  But all got to Vanstone's without too many problems.  With Barry unable to fulfill his ride leader's duties, it was left to the eleven others to sort out the route.  However we eventually got to Wandon End without mishap - and then, lo &... Clubruns 31st August

So who didn't go on a club ride on this bright & sunny day?  Can't be many judging by the numbers out.  I was pleasantly surprised with leading sixteen on a lumpy, bumpy trip to Shenley - some hills, or what?.  Yet this was surpassed by twentyfour on the easies.  Needless to say this large group had to be split with about half drafting Bruno, and the rest with Bob.  Us meds used the hills to split... Clubruns 24th August

Five went on the Barry Marathon to Maldon and ended up doing about 100 miles.  Fifteen took to the roads for fifty miles on the easy, including a few guests.  Of the seven who braved the med\fast, all wore club kit.  A fairly stiff westerly wind made the return journeys a bit more arduous than they needed to be but it remained bright, warm and sunny most of the time.

Clubruns 17th August

Demanding, or what?  And that's just the easy ride.  Some awful conditions, and a crash, and a puncture, and a broken chain, and a split tyre.  And not all the same person.  Hope CB's hand repairs itself soon.  Was painful just to look at it. Took three of us ages to work out how to fix DH's chain back into place.  How can something so easy present so many problems?  We spent a lot of time with... [more]

Clubruns 10th August

Despite the worst efforts of the weather, ten riders still braved the elements.  With four on the medium and six on the easy this was quite an impressive tour de force!

09/08/14 - Windsor-Chester-Windsor 600km Audax

I'd done a 200, a 300 & a 400 but never attempted a 600km Audax.  After spending Friday night sleeping (badly) at a Scout Hut in Windsor, I set the next day at 07:00 for this 615km Audax.  All went well and soon I was at the first control crossing the A40 at Eynsham (75kms).  From there it was on to Honeybourne (132kms).  Naturally we were heading NW into a westerly wind.  It could have been... 26/07/14 - National 400 Audax

I wanted to better my previous one day best of 300kms so settled for this one.  Left Ingleby Barwick (twixt Stockton & Yarm) at 10:00 for the Ripon control (72kms).  With the wind following it was a very quick journey and my average was 18.2mph.  I didn't think I was putting in too much effort but as the day got hotter and hotter, I got slower and slower.  Sedbergh at 158kms was a welcome relief... 04/07/14 - Hereward The Wake, 300km Audax

I got home from holiday on Thursday afternoon and was very apprehensive about taking part in this event as it started the next day at 21:00 from Gt Dunmow.  However as I hadn't put on as much weight as I'd expected I decided I might as well go for it.

I cleared Cambridge by 23:00 and got to Whittlesey (100km) at 01:00, a good, fast, flat, wind assisted journey.  I left there at about 01:20 for... [more]
