Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Clubruns 6th April

About 16 took part in the two rides today.  The numbers were down from the usual, but as 13 others rode the TT it was still a high overall turnout on a not to bright Sunday morning.  The promised rains never materialised although the high winds did restrict the speed.  All rides went to the Codicote Garden Centre, the meds arriving after the easies had left.

Clubruns 30th March

With the clocks changing it was a cool morning that only really started to warm up after midday.  However at about 09:00 when it was coldish it was really only 08:00 in real money.  A dozen riders took part in the TT and about the same number went on to Wandon End as the ledmeds.  Seventeen took part in the easy to Ardeley under Chris's stewardship.  By the time everybody returned it was all quite... Clubruns 23rd March

At 08:30 it was bright & sunny.  At 09:30 it wasn't.  Yet over 30 turned up at Ware despite the rain and the promise of poor weather.  And it was certainly a morning for poor weather.  Seventeen rode the easy, eleven the med and four or five the faster med.  The magnificent seventeen had to sort three punctures all within a few yards of each other.  The slightly short of a dozen meds, just the... Clubruns 16th March

Yet another fine day.  Started off warm, and got hotter.  Whilst many took part in a Ware - Cambridge sportive yet there were still over 25 out on the clubbies.  Again the largest group was the easies and although Whitwell wasn't the best choice for a large group there was Codicote Garden Centre down the road and a half-a-dozen took advantage of this option.  The meds flew from Much Hadham to Reed... Clubruns 9th March

Glorious weather.  Warm, not too breezy, not a cloud on the horizon.  And over 40 riders were out, spread over the four rides.  The biggest lorry was the easy group which consisted of 20 takers.  The led med to Dunstable Downs attracted 15, seduced by the option of Bison Hill.  Not all took this fantastic opportunity to suffer from bulging eyes, muscles and whatever else with some finding excuses... 22/03/14 - ECCA 10 (E33/10a)

Due to roadworks this event, although scheduled for the E2, had to be moved to the slower more difficult E33.  However with the strength of the SW wind it probably made no difference!  The most overheard comment afterwards at HQ was "that's the slowest 10 I've ever done".  The course started with a following wind but uphill.  Then there was nearly five miles straight at the gale.  The last 3-4 was... 05/04/14 - The Copdock Circuit 100km Audax

A good route from Copdock - Hadleigh - Lavenham - Long Melford - Boxford - Higham - Copdock.  Good weather, strong cross wind

As part of my recovery and rehabilitation from injury I have been advised to try pedalling using just my left leg in order to strengthen my psoas muscle and therefore help minimise the cork-screw action that I seem to have developed.  So that's what I did in this event. ... [more]

05/04/14 - 3 Down 300km Audax

Paul rode 318km.

Excellent ride on the 3Down yesterday. Good run down to Pangbourne under blue skies with little wind. A quick feed at Little Henry's then on to the Hampshire downs with headwind and drizzle/rain, which was to stay with us for most of the day. A very scenic ride through the Test valley and into the New Forest. Fordingbridge was the halfway point and marked with a sausage... [more]

29/03/14 - The Wormingford Wyrm 110km Audax

On a cool breezy morning Peter went to Wormingford, a few miles NW of Colchester.  It was an enjoyable Audax although he committed the cardinal sin of Audaxing, ie never follow someone who looks like he knows what he's doing.  Not adhering to this basic principal added an extra four miles to the route.  It was a pleasant, circular trip on good roads and lanes and will be well worth revisiting next... 15/03/14 - The Springtime 200 & 160km Audax

Paul did the 200 and Graham & Peter the 160.  Lovely day but a strong NW wind was a pig to ride against.

First audax since last April.Good route, no problems, but with a 110km into a headwind I'm a little more tired than expected!  Paul.

Our only anxious time came when we were nearly broadsided by a herd of deer.  A beautiful, spectacular moment that makes you realise that it's not always safe... [more]

08/03/14 - The Lasham Loop 110km Audax

I'd never really realised that the South Downs extended so far across England.  So I went to Catherington (just north of Portsmouth) with no real expectations of anything in the problem compartment, but soon came back to earth.  The hills just got steeper and steeper and longer and longer.  With many of the lanes almost impassable and almost unrideable, it soon became a war of attrition.  With the...
