Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

28/03/15 - Hard Boiled 300km Audax

When Alex saw that I'd entered this, he looked a bit quizzical and then confided that this was one of the two most difficult events on the AUK calendar - the other being Gospel Pass.  So I was forewarned.  Started with about 30 others from Poole station at 02:00 but within three miles I was on my own as I'd decided to ride at my own pace.  After 72km and with a following wind I arrived at a Pub... Wormingford Dragon 211km 28 Mar

John Mac, Alex and Graham rode this event in the countryside north of Colchester. The route was a squashed circle ridden clockwise. The most exposed section, 90km between Newmarket and Debenham, featured a strong following wind - so we could not really complain about the final, hilly 50km into the wind, but we did.

An enjoyable, if at times a challenging day. Congratulations to John who's first... [more]

Club Runs 29th March 2015

Cat 5 run led by John F

The first day of British Summertime turned out to be wet and windy with only 3 members setting out from Ware to be joined shortly by Barry who had no takers for his Cat 3 ride. Outward through Wareside, Bakers End, where Barry turned for home. By Much Hadham the rain was easing off and the tail wind helped us along through Little Hadham, Albury, Furneux Pelham, Stocking... Cat 6 ride led by Mike

A stubborn chill persisted all the ride from Ware to Bunters and back, via Barwick Ford & Great Munden out and Furneaux Pelham, Braughing & Barwick Ford on the return. At the stop the group of 16 split between the two cafes, depending on their preference for solid British fare and sophisticated continental patisserie. There were no incidents, mechanicals nor sightings of... [more]

Club Runs 15th March 2015

Cat 5 ride led by Cathy

12 riders in total. Bruno decided to take a short cut to the café and Barry accompanied him.  Paul also left early. The remaining 9 of us went to the café, most to the ride against strong cold north-easterly wind.   After lunch, we lost Sara, Patrick and Mark.  Lesley too went home as she wanted to check on her new dog, so that left 6 of us.   Eventually, Wendy peeled... Club Runs 8th March 2014

Cat 3 ride led by Ian P

A very pleasant ride out from Ware to the pop-up cafe in Great Chishill (just outside Royston).

Well I say cafe but it was actually the front room of a very nice bungalow next to the church. From May onwards the cafe is actually the church but out of season it is volunteers’ front rooms!

Friendly welcome, quick service, fresh homemade soup and cake and excellent... [more]

Cat 3 ride led by Barry

Ten riders rode out to Royston via Colliers End, Old Hall Green, Wood End, Ardeley, Cottered,Throcking, Sandon, Therfield and back via Barkway and B1368 to Puckeridge and Barwick. A sunny but very windy return with no mechanicals. 50miles

First Ladies Ride led by Emma

6 ladies departed from Senova cycles for a steady ride out to Church Farm. A gentle breeze kept the pace good on a rather chilly icy morning. Cake and laughter filled Church farms summer house and new cycling buddies were made. The wind was not our friend on the way back but we battled on to beat the rain. An enjoyable cycle had by all- and the best bit-puncture... [more]

14/03/15 - Yellowbelly 200km Audax

I would like to say that this was one of the easiest audaxes I've ever undertaken.  200 kms on a warm spring day in the flatlands of Lincolnshire with interesting scenery and a not too challenging terrain.  So far not a word is true.  The event started from Carlton Le Moorland at 08:00 and headed SE towards Grantham(ish) before heading NE (nearby) Sleaford to Coningsby then Burgh Le Marsh (just... 18/02/15 - Wye Wednesday 200km Audax

This 208km Audax incorporated everything that I dislike about cycling an event.  Getting up and leaving the house in the middle of the night.  Driving to the event.  Cold, with a strong headwind.  Hills.  Icy conditions first thing and seeing riders fall off in the slippery conditions.  More hills, always going upwards except when it's icy (then it's downwards at an even slower pace than the...
