Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

25/04/15 - Eureka Excursion 215km Audax

The Eureka Cafe is a noted cyclist's cafe up on the Wirral and it was a good chance to ride the Cheshire Plain, except for the guy who "lost his front wheel" crossing the A49.  He was OK, but there was a lengthy delay as I had to help with the police and the paramedic and the bike repair and the blood (cos he hadn't got a helmet on).  He ended up with cuts, bruises and an egg-shaped\sized lump on... Cat 5 run led by Cathy

7 of us set out from Puckeridge to Clavering via Great Chishill and Elmdon and the leader at least was thankful that the wind had died down from the previous weekend, as this meant there was a greater chance of staying upright on her bike.   The outer journey was interrupted by Bob's dramatic puncture.  There must be some law, the opposite of Sod's law, that means a... Cat 6 ride led by Danny H

16 riders set off from Ware to Theydon Bois in windy but delightfully sunny weather on perhaps the hilliest ride the " Easies " tackle. It was our usual route but done in reverse order. This would hopefully give us more miles with the wind at our backs and worked a bit!!. As seems to be par for the course lately the wheelers posse took over the cafe filling it with the... [more]

Club Runs 5th April 2015

Cat 6 run led by Bob

A really enjoyable ride in decent weather to the Village Tearoom, Hatfield Heath, where, thanks to meticulous planning by leader Captain Bob, seats had been reserved and extra crew employed to cope with the predicted rush. After a noisy interlude and profuse apologies for the disturbance to a table of smartly dressed pensioners we enjoyed a trouble free tailwind assisted... [more]

Club Runs 29th March 2015

Cat 5 run led by John F

The first day of British Summertime turned out to be wet and windy with only 3 members setting out from Ware to be joined shortly by Barry who had no takers for his Cat 3 ride. Outward through Wareside, Bakers End, where Barry turned for home. By Much Hadham the rain was easing off and the tail wind helped us along through Little Hadham, Albury, Furneux Pelham, Stocking... Club Runs 22nd March 2015

Cat 6 ride led by Mike

A stubborn chill persisted all the ride from Ware to Bunters and back, via Barwick Ford & Great Munden out and Furneaux Pelham, Braughing & Barwick Ford on the return. At the stop the group of 16 split between the two cafes, depending on their preference for solid British fare and sophisticated continental patisserie. There were no incidents, mechanicals nor sightings of... [more]

11/04/15 - Heart of England 300km Audax

After the battering I took on the Hard Boiled two weeks previously I realised that it was time to "get back on the horse" and stop making a fuss.  This was a much less fraught journey from Cirencester to Alcester, Atherstone, Daventry, Tackley and back to Cirencester.  It had the usual combinations of rain and strong westerly winds but it wasn't cold, which was something of a relief.  There were... 28/03/15 - Hard Boiled 300km Audax

When Alex saw that I'd entered this, he looked a bit quizzical and then confided that this was one of the two most difficult events on the AUK calendar - the other being Gospel Pass.  So I was forewarned.  Started with about 30 others from Poole station at 02:00 but within three miles I was on my own as I'd decided to ride at my own pace.  After 72km and with a following wind I arrived at a Pub... Wormingford Dragon 211km 28 Mar

John Mac, Alex and Graham rode this event in the countryside north of Colchester. The route was a squashed circle ridden clockwise. The most exposed section, 90km between Newmarket and Debenham, featured a strong following wind - so we could not really complain about the final, hilly 50km into the wind, but we did.

An enjoyable, if at times a challenging day. Congratulations to John who's first... [more]
