Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Clubruns 26th October

Another year done.  Our "new year" starts next week.  With about ten audaxing there were still nearly thirty out on the club rides.  Two braved the med\fast and seven attempted to scale various mountains under Barry's tutulage, leaving another nineteen to take the easy path.  Two of these mistimed the trains to the start but soon caught up, Franco provided an early bath but otherwise it wasn't too... 26/10/14 - Emitremmus Desrever 100km Audax

Got a bit cold waiting for the start but soon warmed up once we got going.  About ten of us took part and it was good to see the blue\yellow HW tops in the distance - guess who couldn't keep up!  A very fast journey to Saffron Walden was counterbalanced by an arduous into-the-wind return.  Fortunately a breather was to be had when Alan punctured.  Due to the clocks going back, it became a bit of a... Clubruns 19th October

A bright & sunny, but coldish day saw many riders out on the lanes.  The morning journeys were largely uneventful apart from punctures - an occupational hazard when there are nearly forty out.  Fifteen took off with the easies whilst twenty-two made up the meds.  The only really cold place was at Ashlyn's - not their fault but we chose (or were told to choose) to sit outside.  This left us at the... Clubruns 12th October

Well it finally had to happen.  Mike punctured.  S'pect he'll return the tyre to the shop as it's only done about a million miles.  Then Bob punctured in sympathy.  Who'd have thought?  What are the odds?  No wonder there's a photo of Dr Who (on facebook) looking as if he wished he could be anywhere else.  The two easy groups made their way to Hatfield Heath whilst the meds trundled from... Clubruns 5th October

Cool start turning into a glorious October day and the HW juggernaut slowly ground itself into action.  With six rides to choose from, different start locations and a varying selection of venues to aim for about forty riders took to two wheels and a chance to ride on a fairly wind-free, sunny day.  One intrepid bunch began their ride at Puckeridge and headed northwards into the wilds of Cambs. ... Clubruns 28th September

Clubruns 21st September

An almost record turnout today.  The two easies amassed 21 riders and the medium accounted for a further 11.  The med\fast was well attended and at least 1 did the fast.  With a further 7 off down to Herne Hill for a spot of track race tuition (although most will never do the real thing!) it meant that over 40 took part in club related events.  A good autumn morning, sunny with a light breeze,... 09/08/14 - Windsor-Chester-Windsor 600km Audax

I'd done a 200, a 300 & a 400 but never attempted a 600km Audax.  After spending Friday night sleeping (badly) at a Scout Hut in Windsor, I set the next day at 07:00 for this 615km Audax.  All went well and soon I was at the first control crossing the A40 at Eynsham (75kms).  From there it was on to Honeybourne (132kms).  Naturally we were heading NW into a westerly wind.  It could have been... 26/07/14 - National 400 Audax

I wanted to better my previous one day best of 300kms so settled for this one.  Left Ingleby Barwick (twixt Stockton & Yarm) at 10:00 for the Ripon control (72kms).  With the wind following it was a very quick journey and my average was 18.2mph.  I didn't think I was putting in too much effort but as the day got hotter and hotter, I got slower and slower.  Sedbergh at 158kms was a welcome relief... 04/07/14 - Hereward The Wake, 300km Audax

I got home from holiday on Thursday afternoon and was very apprehensive about taking part in this event as it started the next day at 21:00 from Gt Dunmow.  However as I hadn't put on as much weight as I'd expected I decided I might as well go for it.

I cleared Cambridge by 23:00 and got to Whittlesey (100km) at 01:00, a good, fast, flat, wind assisted journey.  I left there at about 01:20 for... [more]

Herne Hill

For many of us (of a questionable age) the meaning of life is forty-two.  For Roberta it's nine and threequarters.  (Ask her when you see her).  A party of seven joined a group from Watton Wheelers so as to frequent the 1948 Olympic Velodrome at Hernia Hill.  Whilst the centre is in a dilapidated state, the track is still very useable.  Seems they only have the lease to the track itself, the...
