Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Wednesday evening run led by Mike E

Final evening ride before the summer solstice - next week the glass-half-empty brigade will be full of "woe, woe and thrice woe, the nights are drawing in". Not that there were extra photons of light around this week, as the sky remained distinctly grey and rain threatened, but never arrived. Fourteen, later thirteeen, headed to Ardeley via Bennington, then... [more]

Cat 5/6 run led by Mike E

Thirteen riders morphed into a single ride, a category 5/6 ride to Mocca Cafe at Bishops Stortford. A mechanical stalled progress on the outward leg. Food intake was more modest than usual at the stopping point, as some were mindful of the sausages and burgers available at Allenbury's later in the day. A couple chose their own route home. The remainder wheeled into... [more]

Cat 5 run led by Mike E

With Phoebus staying in our sky for that bit longer at the moment, the led group extended its range, taking in Much Hadham, Standon and Haultwick. Just before the crepuscular shadow emerged, it took in Sacombe Hill for a final bit of fun. 20 riders and 28 miles. Four also rode unled.

Club Run 3rd June 2015

Mid week evening run led by Mike E

Bored by the coverage of the Sepp Blatter mularkey, or more likely, buoyed by a bright warm evening, over twenty riders assembled at Allenbury's. Fifteen joined the led ride to Allen's Green and back. Not even a minor incident to report over the 25 miles.

30/05/15 - Windsor-Chester-Windsor 600km Audax

This is a 625km audax and completion of this would mean that we would both have achieved super randonneur status and thus be eligible to enter the Paris-Brest-Paris this summer.  And you don't complete the 600 until you've done the 625!  And there's no time allowance for the extra miles - it's still 40 hours.  With wonderful controls at Windsor, Chalgrove, Weston Subedge, Hartlebury, Lilleshall... 09/05/15 - Asparagus & Strawberries 400km Audax

My second 400, and MartinW's debut.  We set out from Manningtree at 08:40 and headed north, then east and then north again to Acle - a distance of 150km.  The journey was a wind-assisted flat effort and we made good time despite the fact that we had decided not to rush.  Payback time was from Acle to Wells (217km) when we couldn't rush due to the headwind.  All the riders suffered from varying... 04/05/15 - Counties Festival 100km Audax

Headed out at 10:00 SE from High Easter via Boreham, Danbury and then S to Woodham Ferrers.  Returned past Maldon, Kelvedon then Braintree to HQ.  A good ride, fair weather.  Got back at 14:45 after 110kms.

01/05/15 - Toboggan de la Selune 100km Randonee

The Selune is a river just south of Avranches.  Unfortunately our trip to Brittany\Normandy coincided with the monsoon season.  The randonee itself was billed as a 100km but actually it turned out to be 83km.  Still, it was the first time that I'd ever been followed throughout by a "Broom-Wagon".  Nineteen took part (mostly from CT Avranches).  Would have been more but the weather was so bad. ...
