Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Club Runs 17th May 2015

Cat 6 run led by Wendy

12 of us headed out to Hitchin in nice sunny weather via Knebworth, Codicote, Whitwell and Preston. Just as the leader was thinking it was going fairly well, came the shout of ‘xxx canicle’, which turns out to be a broken chain. This was soon fixed and we headed to Du Tea, Hitchin, where we were served with a nice selection of cakes, coffee, and proper tea (loose leaf, not... [more]

Club Runs 10th May 2015

Cat 5 run led by Cathy

7 riders came out on cat 5 on Sunday including 3 'easies' who decide to mix it up a bit with a non cat 6 ride.  The 7 also included John Highet, who really should be credited with double points as he did two wheel revolutions to our one.   Not content with having cycled over 200 miles or with having cycled though the night, Peter also joined us clearly wanting to give his... Club Runs 3rd May 2015

Cat 5 run led by Ian S

2 hardy souls plus me started in the rain, ("it'll soon stop") from Much Hadham and rode via Sheering, Matching Tye, Fyfield, Willingale and Norton Heath to Blackmore (still raining). Lovely home made cakes and scones in the bespoke conservatory adjoining Megarrys, (the bit at the back with the old armchairs and plastic corrugated roof). The rain had just stopped when we... Club Runs 26th April 2015

Cat 5 run led by John F

The early morning rain had cleared away by the time of the 9.30 kick off from Much Hadham but only 4 riders lined up for the start. Our outward route took us via a shallow Much Hadham ford, Green Tye, Spellbrook, Little Hallingbury, Hatfield Forest, Hatfield Broad Oak, Hellmans Cross, Bacon End to Great Dunmow. Café in the High Street this time - The Tea Tree Café by the... [more]

Club Runs 19th April 2015

Cat 5 run led by Cathy

7 of us set out from Puckeridge to Clavering via Great Chishill and Elmdon and the leader at least was thankful that the wind had died down from the previous weekend, as this meant there was a greater chance of staying upright on her bike.   The outer journey was interrupted by Bob's dramatic puncture.  There must be some law, the opposite of Sod's law, that means a... 09/05/15 - Asparagus & Strawberries 400km Audax

My second 400, and MartinW's debut.  We set out from Manningtree at 08:40 and headed north, then east and then north again to Acle - a distance of 150km.  The journey was a wind-assisted flat effort and we made good time despite the fact that we had decided not to rush.  Payback time was from Acle to Wells (217km) when we couldn't rush due to the headwind.  All the riders suffered from varying... Wheelers' off-shore account

Five Wheelers enjoyed a week-end in the Isle of Wight and tackled the IoW Randonée. Richard H reports.[more]

04/05/15 - Counties Festival 100km Audax

Headed out at 10:00 SE from High Easter via Boreham, Danbury and then S to Woodham Ferrers.  Returned past Maldon, Kelvedon then Braintree to HQ.  A good ride, fair weather.  Got back at 14:45 after 110kms.

01/05/15 - Toboggan de la Selune 100km Randonee

The Selune is a river just south of Avranches.  Unfortunately our trip to Brittany\Normandy coincided with the monsoon season.  The randonee itself was billed as a 100km but actually it turned out to be 83km.  Still, it was the first time that I'd ever been followed throughout by a "Broom-Wagon".  Nineteen took part (mostly from CT Avranches).  Would have been more but the weather was so bad. ... 25/04/15 - Eureka Excursion 215km Audax

The Eureka Cafe is a noted cyclist's cafe up on the Wirral and it was a good chance to ride the Cheshire Plain, except for the guy who "lost his front wheel" crossing the A49.  He was OK, but there was a lengthy delay as I had to help with the police and the paramedic and the bike repair and the blood (cos he hadn't got a helmet on).  He ended up with cuts, bruises and an egg-shaped\sized lump on... 11/04/15 - Heart of England 300km Audax

After the battering I took on the Hard Boiled two weeks previously I realised that it was time to "get back on the horse" and stop making a fuss.  This was a much less fraught journey from Cirencester to Alcester, Atherstone, Daventry, Tackley and back to Cirencester.  It had the usual combinations of rain and strong westerly winds but it wasn't cold, which was something of a relief.  There were...
