Wheelers' Calendar

Welcome to the Hertfordshire Wheelers.

The Hertfordshire Wheelers Cycling Club has been established in the East Herts area since July 1928 - one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire. The club has members from throughout the area including Cheshunt, Hertford, Ware, Stevenage and Much Hadham. Each Sunday a "club run" takes place. This is a ride of 35-50 miles through the lanes of Hertfordshire and Essex taking in a refreshment stop in a café or pub. Members also take part in time-trialling, track-racing, road-racing, audax and sportives. [More]

Clubruns 24th August

Five went on the Barry Marathon to Maldon and ended up doing about 100 miles.  Fifteen took to the roads for fifty miles on the easy, including a few guests.  Of the seven who braved the med\fast, all wore club kit.  A fairly stiff westerly wind made the return journeys a bit more arduous than they needed to be but it remained bright, warm and sunny most of the time.

Clubruns 17th August

Demanding, or what?  And that's just the easy ride.  Some awful conditions, and a crash, and a puncture, and a broken chain, and a split tyre.  And not all the same person.  Hope CB's hand repairs itself soon.  Was painful just to look at it. Took three of us ages to work out how to fix DH's chain back into place.  How can something so easy present so many problems?  We spent a lot of time with... [more]

Clubruns 10th August

Despite the worst efforts of the weather, ten riders still braved the elements.  With four on the medium and six on the easy this was quite an impressive tour de force!

Clubruns 3rd August

A calamitous start.  No JohnF and when the news broke late on Saturday evening many dropped out of the meds to go with the easies.  Due to John's chronic last minute back issue, the meds took to the road rudderless.  Then Peter stepped into the breach.  So it was still rudderless.  On a glorious morning three started in Hertford at 07:15 picking up a further two at Wadesmill and yet another one at... Clubruns 27th July

Lots out.  Lovely day.  Cathy took a crew to Clavering Lakes & Lee made his maiden voyage as an easy leader (with Wendy The Navigator).  As both John Mac & Lee would agree, all you have to do is supply an idea - and then find someone else who knows the way!  Easy, or what?  The easies consisted of eleven, the meds accounted for seventeen (in two groups?!?), the RouteA's were three and seven flew... Clubruns 20th July

Lots out, spread over several rides.  Apart from the fast trip from Hertford, all others met at Ware.  This led to a rather large group taking up a lot of space in the car park.  This large group soon split into its component parts with John's led med taking fourteen to Melbourne and Bruno's easy taking seven to Puckeridge.  A few took on the delights of RouteC and the dozen that were left set out... 09/08/14 - Windsor-Chester-Windsor 600km Audax

I'd done a 200, a 300 & a 400 but never attempted a 600km Audax.  After spending Friday night sleeping (badly) at a Scout Hut in Windsor, I set the next day at 07:00 for this 615km Audax.  All went well and soon I was at the first control crossing the A40 at Eynsham (75kms).  From there it was on to Honeybourne (132kms).  Naturally we were heading NW into a westerly wind.  It could have been... 26/07/14 - National 400 Audax

I wanted to better my previous one day best of 300kms so settled for this one.  Left Ingleby Barwick (twixt Stockton & Yarm) at 10:00 for the Ripon control (72kms).  With the wind following it was a very quick journey and my average was 18.2mph.  I didn't think I was putting in too much effort but as the day got hotter and hotter, I got slower and slower.  Sedbergh at 158kms was a welcome relief... 04/07/14 - Hereward The Wake, 300km Audax

I got home from holiday on Thursday afternoon and was very apprehensive about taking part in this event as it started the next day at 21:00 from Gt Dunmow.  However as I hadn't put on as much weight as I'd expected I decided I might as well go for it.

I cleared Cambridge by 23:00 and got to Whittlesey (100km) at 01:00, a good, fast, flat, wind assisted journey.  I left there at about 01:20 for... [more]
