Welwyn Track League - 10th May

Welwyn Track League - 10th May

14 May 13

Brian and Tony took part in another night's racing at the Welwyn track.
The opening race was the scratch. Brian had managed 2 second places in the last two meetings in the scratch race and had put a plan in place to change that. Tony tried to help keep things together in the last few laps. Things were going well with about half a lap to go with Brian about 6th. He hit the gas and passed 4 riders. With one to reel in as the line came up he was almost alongside him and lunged for the line. Though his opponent congratulated him on the win Brian wasn't confident. " I waited for the announcement and heard ... and Brian Evans in second place, grrrrrr ".
Next on the agenda was the block handicap. Here people are seeded and then start on different parts of the track. It is then a 10 lapper to the finish. Tony was out on station 5 with about half a lap start over the scratch group. Brian was on station 2 with about a 60 m start. His group was caught quickly by the scratch group. Tony's group were caught quickly by the group behind them. They then caught the group in front which meant there were now 2 groups. Brian's group were struggling to catch up. He came to the front and drove over to bridge the gap and, rather than hanging at the back, carried his momentum to the front of the group where he found Tony and 2 CC Luton riders. As they came into the last half lap Tony took it up and, as he went, Brian moved past one of the CC Luton riders. However, like a flash, Renato Davis (Doug Davis's youngest son), now riding with Welwyn Wheelers, came past all 3 of them. Tony held on for 2nd - his first track league points. Brian came in 4th. As Tony, Renato and Brian all sit together between races they were all pleased.
On to the points race - a young mans race. Brian took 5 points so did Renato, Tony, bucking the trend, took 6 points - enough to finish 4th and take more track league points.
The final race is always the 10 miler. Brian was pleased to finish in the second group - finishing is damned hard. Tony pulled up after half way.
Brian and Tony are having a lot of fun. " If you fancy coming across one Friday I am sure you would enjoy watching and may be tempted to give it a go ".
