Category 3 ride led by Tony Howard

A fairly uneventful ride, apart from a couple of issues with loose handle bars, to The Teacake in Shepreth. Ten riders set off, which included two guests, from Ware up past Hanbury Manor and down White Hill. We then turned left and some criticism was heard by the leader “Surely the Teacake is right”. This comment was of course ignored, as I had a plan, which sent us through Benington and Cromer heading for Royston and onto Shepreth. The weather at this point was quite pleasant with a warm south westerly breeze coming over our left shoulder. Just as we arrived to a packed Teacake garden the cycling occupants of a table got up to leave. This was very handy, so we ordered our food and drink, which was served in no time and was very nice indeed!

The journey home was a different kettle of fish, the breeze having turned into a wind coming from 2 o’clock (direction not time). This, coupled with the beautiful hills on the B1368 at Barkway, made things challenging, but we survived and all was going well until the wet stuff arrived and a quick vote shortened the return leg by five miles! The final stats being 57 miles at an average speed of 16 mph!
