The Hertfordshire Wheelers.
About us
The Club was formed in July 1928 with its first ride starting from the The Blackbirds public house in the middle of
Hertford thus making us one of the oldest established cycling clubs in Hertfordshire.
This year (2008) is our 80th anniversary and to celebrate this very special occasion we have an anniversary ride and meal on Sunday 6th July.

Clubruns
These take place every Sunday throughout the year from locations mainly in East Herts.
We use quiet country lanes wherever possible and avoid main roads. Rides are usually about 40 miles
(winter) to 70 miles (summer) and are either Easy Paced (less than 12 mph) or Medium Paced (12 to 15 mph).
A stop at a pub or tea shop for lunch is usually included and we make sure that no one is left behind.
By the way, arriving by car with your bike at the start point is perfectly acceptable. Members often live some distance away
or do not want to cycle more than the ride miles in poor weather. Potential members are very welcome to ride with us a few times before
making a decision to join the Club.
If you are new to club cycling, or are a slower rider, try our Tea Shop Rides which are an easy paced 25 miles on a Sunday afternoon.
They are an excellent introduction to club riding.
In the winter months our racing members prefer a faster ride, 16 mph +, to prepare themselves for the
coming seasons events so an alternative ride is offered in addition to the standard club run.
Although we do not currently have a mountain bike section, about once a month a 3 hour mainly off road ride
is provided either as the main club run or as an alternative ride.
All rides are listed in The Mudflap our monthly newsletter and program.
Our main Start points:
- HERTFORD - Hartham Common public car park. O.S.Grid ref. TL326130
- MUCH HADHAM – bus shelter north end of High Street. O.S.Grid ref. TL428196
- SAWBRIDGEWORTH - Bell Street public car park. O.S.Grid ref. TL482148
- WARE - Broadmeads public car park near level crossing O.S.Grid ref. TL358141
Racing.
TIME TRIALS : we are affiliated to the (Road) Time Trials Council which allows our members to
ride events on public roads under their regulations and insurance.
From March to October we run regular (mainly weekday evening) Club time trials on local courses.
The most popular distance is 10 miles which is an excellent introduction for a beginner to racing or for regular racers
to hone their speed. For longer distances and faster competition our racing members compete in
Open Events both locally and around the country up to National Championship level.
The Club promotes our own Open Time Trial events at distances of 10 and 30 miles.
ROAD RACING (Massed Start) and TRACK RACING : We are also affiliated to British Cycling (Federation) which, together
with an individual membership, allows our members to compete in bunch start racing on public roads and also on closed track events.
We are fortunate in being close to Welwyn track which many of our racing members use.
The Club promotes our own Road Race in September over a distance of about 60 miles.
Our Club is also affiliated to several local time trial and road race organisations covering Hertfordshire, Essex and North London.
This gives our members priority entry to their events and the ability to compete for their trophies.
Contact our Racing Secretary for more information.
AUDAX and SPORTIVES :
These are increasingly popular non-competitive rides over a set course which has to be completed in a stated time.
Popular distances are 100km to 200 km but can be much longer.
Hertfordshire Wheelers offers three Audax rides on Sunday 13th July 2008 over distances of 100, 150 and 200km.
CLUBROOM :
We are one of the few cycling clubs to offer a free weekly clubroom meeting. This takes place each Thursday from about 8.15pm onwards at :
St. MARGARETSBURY SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB.
STANSTEAD ABBOTTS, WARE, HERTS.
Licenced bar available.
Especially in the winter months we have cycling films, talks, training sessions and sometimes just a natter !
In the summer, broadcasts of current continental races such as the Tour de France are shown.
SOCIAL :
On a Sunday in early December we have our Christmas Dinner and Prize Presentation which in recent years has been at the
George IV pub at Great Amwell. This is an excellent opportunity to not only socialise with fellow Club members but also to
bring along spouses, friends and guests from other clubs.
Club Clothing
We have recently changed our Club cycling clothing to reflect out traditional colours of light blue, dark blue and gold.
A full range of jerseys, both long and short sleeved, with rear pockets, skin suits, arm and leg warmers, gilets, shoe covers etc
are available in these colours and displaying our name and the Club emblem of the Hertfordshire stag.
Contact our Club Clothing Secretary for more information.
In addition we also have Club leisure clothing consisting of short sleeved polo shirts and long sleeved sweatshirts.
These are more suitable for wearing at Club nights and at other non-cycling times.
They are in a complimentary blue to our riding clothing and come embroidered with the Club name and stag emblem.
For a small extra charge your personal name can added.
